Chapters

From reminding their fellow students that poverty exists even during midterms, to hosting development discussions, to sending volunteers overseas, our chapters are the backbone of EWB's work in Canada.

Across the country our student and professional chapters are catching the attention of Canadians and asking them to play their part in reducing global poverty.

Working In Canada

We live in an increasingly interconnected world in which the actions and decisions of people in Canada can have a profound effect on developing communities. Moreover, Canadians are proud of our country’s tradition of leadership on international issues—from peacekeeping, to the International Campaign to Ban landmines, to the International Criminal Court.

We believe that Canadians want to continue this tradition; they want Canada to become a beacon — a model global citizen — for how the world responds to the challenge of global poverty. Choosing to reduce poverty will only happen when people understand the connections between their daily actions and the lives of people in developing communities. That is why our 20,000 members are raising awareness among the general population and challenging:

  1. Canadians to make pro-poor decisions
  2. Our government to improve their policies
  3. Canadian corporations to adopt fair and humane practices

Through EWB’s School Outreach, Curriculum Enhancement, Member Education, and Public Engagement Programs—all aimed at making Canada a global leader in the fight against extreme poverty—our chapter members are helping to shape Canada’s future as a model global citizen.

What We Do

Member Education - Developing our members’ knowledge and awareness of international development.

EWB is striving to continuously increase our members' understanding of international development and the contributions that Canadians can make toward human development. Through participating in our member education program within their respective chapters, our members are increasing their skills and knowledge, becoming effective spokespeople in Canada for international development and overseas volunteers.

EWB members have the opportunity to learn about development and enhance their skills at several points throughout the year, including the EWB National Conference, Regional Leadership Retreats and Chapter Education Meetings.

School Outreach - Generating awareness in local schools about the need and opportunity to help reduce poverty internationally.

Canada will only become a model global citizen if our future leaders understand the complexities of the international community. The students of today, if passionate, knowledgeable and committed, will help to ensure a sustainable tomorrow.

That is why EWB chapter volunteers engage younger students, raising their awareness and understanding of international development issues. Since the initiation of our school outreach program, EWB has reached over 20,000 students. Participants of our 'Water For The World' and 'Food For Thought' interactive workshops are encouraged to become passionate about the need for change and well-equipped to turn their good intentions into impact.

Public Engagement - Fostering understanding among the Canadian public about the impact of our actions here in Canada on those in impoverished countries.

To help make Canada the most pro-development country in the world, EWB members engage Canadians, raising their awareness about the urgent need for human development. Our members regularly run events aimed at engaging Canadians in the fight against poverty.

Leadership Development - Building the leadership skills of our chapter members so that they can become influential champions of human development.

EWB continues to attract phenomenal people dedicated to building a better world, which has been critical to our success as an organization. We are committed to creating opportunities for these individuals, our members, to develop their leadership skills and become influential champions of international development.

Our focus on leadership has put EWB on the radars of universities, corporations and other non-governmental organizations as one of the premier organizations for developing student leaders.
