A Neat Volunteering Opportunity!
Mar 16, 2010 - 4:08PM
(by Min Feng)
Hey Ryerson EWBers!
We have an amazing opportunity to do some outreach, make some great collaborations and engage youth on April 1st and 2nd in Toronto!
EWB has been invited to a NSBE (National Society of Black Engineer - one of the largest engineering organizations in the world) international conference that's happening in Toronto at the beginning of April and we need TONS of volunteers to help out to make this event a success! The target age group is ages 13 - 18 and they've asked us to do all 3 SO presentations!
Here are the details:
All of these presentations are for an audience of 75 people! Because this is for such a large group of audience, I would ideally want about 4 - 6 volunteers for each of these presentations! Experienced and none experienced volunteers are both welcome!!
1st presentation:
When: April 1st, 11:15 - 12:45PM
What : Energy Matter
Where : Metro Toronto Convention Center
2nd Presentation:
When April 1st 3:15 - 4:45PM
What Water for the world
Where Metro Toronto Convention Center
3rd Presentation:
When : April 2nd: 11:15 - 12:45
What Food for thought
Where Metro Toronto Convention Center
There will also be a mandatory training session on Thursday March 25th, from 4 - 5:00PM at the EWB National Office in downtown Toronto!
If you are interested in volunteering for any of the 3 presentations above, please send me an e-mail at: minfeng@ewb.ca and let me know your availability!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Min Feng

Article of the Week
Tea farmers struggle for survival in fields of gold
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/nov/08/food-commodity-prices-land-grab
Soaring demand for food and land may not stop the world's rural communities from plunging deeper into poverty....
Blog of the Week
Each week, we'll be highlighting a blog of an Overseas Volunteer (OVS) or Junior Fellow (JF), past or present for your reading pleasure and fostering greater connections between the past and present OVS/JFs and the chapters!
Boris In Burkina blogged by Boris Martin
http://boboinbobo.blogspot.com/ or for the french version of the Boris au Burkina blog http://boboabobo.blogspot.com/
Bonjour!
The blog this week is from one of our native of France, but studied in Ontario volunteers who is working in Burkina Faso. Boris is a past OVS who was working to establish greater access to markets for farmers and small business owners! He has two blogs, One in French and one in English, feel free to read one, or the other or both!
Quote From the blog:
Have you ever bought a mango at your grocery store?
Did you get lucky enough to find a big one, just ripe, not too green, not to rotten? Did you delicately slice it and tasted the sweet yellow flesh? Then you have not even scratched the surface of how good a mango can be.
Quote of the Week
"Thanks to Fair trade, we will not die of hunger. We will not lose our land. Our children can attend school. Thanks to you, we have a seed of hope in our lives."
Jose Luis Castillo Vasquez, member of the Equal Exchange-supported Las Colinas cooperative, El Salvador, and father of six children.

Each week, we'll be highlighting a blog of an Overseas Volunteer (OVS) or Junior Fellow (JF), past or present for your reading pleasure and fostering greater connections between the past and present OVS/JFs and the chapters!
My New Perspective blogged by John Paul Portelli
http://jpportelli.blogspot.com/
I took a bit of a break for thanksgiving but here it is again! The BLOG OF THE WEEK, this time bringing you not one, but TWO highly inspirational and though provoking stories from the field. Both blogs share amazing examples of the strength of the human spirit when everything else seems to be at odds.
Our first blogger is John Paul Portelli, a volunteer who worked in Malawi in 2008.
Developing Value Chains in Zambia blogged by Mark Hemsworth
http://markhemsworth.blogspot.com/
And our second blogger is Mark Hemsworth, who is currently working in Zambia creating value impact chains!
Here is an excerpt from Mark's Blog:
"Each time there is bad news or unexpected road blocks along the way, it makes me wonder if I'm going down the right path, and if I want to continue down that path. If Zambia has taught me one thing, its to know how to dig deep and keep on going."
Alright that's all for now, have a fantastic week and Happy Reading!

Small Personal Favour from Fellow EWBer
Oct 7, 2009 - 9:40PM
(by Rameza Bacchus)
Hi Everyone!
My name is Rameza and I am a member of the Ryerson Student Chapter. I've been around for awhile in various roles including VP Finance and President.
The reason for my e-mail is that I have a very small but personal, non-EWB related favour to ask of each of you. I recently got engaged and entered a contest at a bridal store where I can win $500 towards things for our upcoming wedding (May 2010). We are currently in second place and the contest ends tomorrow at midnight. I was hesitant to ask but we've tried so hard so far and we're still in second place, and I thought who better to come through for us than my fellow Ryerson EWBers?
Voting is online and very simple (link and instructions below). You will not be spammed as the store is very small. If you wouldn't mind taking a minute to submit your vote for us, it would be tremendously appreciated. Although the voting continues through tomorrow, we will no longer be able to see the number of votes but keep voting, they will count! If you like our story, please ask others to vote too :)
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and for your support!!

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Submit a Vote". You'll have to enter your first name and e-mail address and then you'll get a confirmation e-mail. Check your e-mail and click on "Click here to verify your vote".
THANK YOU!!
Rameza
